Trivia for Today

In 2011, the most popular name for girls in Jefferson County, Missouri was Emma. Sophia was a very close second with only three babies fewer.  However Olivia, Ava, and Isabella were nearly 25 counts away from the second most popular girls names in Jefferson County.  Favorite names for boys included Mason, William, Noah, Jacob and Liam.

Through the month of October, we will be observing alcohol abuse awareness by collecting items to create “Don’t Drink and Drive” key chains to be distributed during Red Ribbon Week.  Please discuss with your children items which might be used.

Make Family Time a Priority
One of the greatest gifts that you can give to your family is the time that you all spend together. In today’s world, too many families are go, go, go all of the time resulting in too little time spent together. Try to find an hour a day when your entire family has an opportunity to connect and share.
 
Take it Ten Minutes at a Time
Children often need only to be offered time, space and permission and they will get all of the play they need. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come as naturally or easily for adults. The good news is that small increments of time spent walking, climbing stairs, gardening, playing with the kids and doing other household chores add up.
Try thinking of ways to build more routine movement into your day by parking your car a little farther away, taking the stairs instead of the escalator, walking once around the grocery store perimeter before beginning to shop or grabbing a leash and going for a walk rather than just letting your dog outside.


H2O Is the Way to Go
One of the simplest and most important things you can do for your health is to drink water. The human body is made up mostly of water (about 60 percent), and it relies on water to help perform every function. This means your body uses lots of water and needs you to replace it continuously. Make water your first choice every time, especially during warmer seasons and after vigorous physical activity. A good guide for most people is to try and drink 8 glasses of water each day. Recipe
Lunchbox Pasta Salad
Ingredients
  • 2 cups uncooked bow ties, wagon wheels or shells
  • 2 cups frozen green peas
  • 1 cup baby carrots, cut into ½-inch logs
  • ½ (14–15 ounces) can baby corn; cut corn into ½-inch logs
  • ½ cup pitted, sliced black olives
  • 1/3 to ½ cup low-fat salad dressing of your choice.
Directions

1. Cook the pasta according to package directions.
2. One to two minutes before pasta is done, add the peas and carrots directly to the simmering pasta.
3. Drain the mixture and rinse under cold running water until cool.
4. Drain again and combine in a large bowl with the olives, baby corn and salad dressing.
5. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Service Project
Through the month of September, we will be collecting metal cans for recycling to raise money for Shriner's Children’s Hospital. Our goal is to fill a cooler with the metal which will score approximately $100 in scrap metal for the cause.

Family Activity Calendar
Use colored removable dots to indicate family activities.  Designate a specific color, such as red for family time at regular intervals each week.  As the year goes by watch carefully how many hours a week your child commits to other color activities such as sports, entertainment, and academics.  With a little cooperation, children will learn to budget time each week for activities which are most important.

Rope Challenge
Help your kids get warmed up for vigorous play or exercise by stretching with a jump rope.  Try these quick and easy exercises.

Reed Stretch: Alternate standing on the rope with one foot as you pull the rope high towards the ceiling with both hands. 

Seated Pull: with legs outstretched and together in front of you, center the rope across the bottom of your arches and lean back with your weight pulling back up with your arms pulling on the jump rope. 

Back Vertical Pull: With one hand grasping one end of a jump rope behind your neck and your dominant hand grasping the dangling rope at approximately your lower back, pull the rope skyward as your dominant hand pulls floor-ward. 
 
Family Food
 
Here's a sweet dip that takes just a few minutes to make. Mix a small container (15 1/2 ounces) of low-fat ricotta cheese with 4 tablespoons of peanut, almond, or soy-nut butter and 2 tablespoons of honey. Serve with crackers, pretzels, or raw vegetables.
